Corrieshalloch Gorge

Corrieshalloch is a mile of gorge the meltwater cut on its way to Loch Broom. You park off the A835, about twenty minutes south of Ullapool, and walk to a Victorian suspension bridge that does that thing Victorian bridges do: it moves. The drop under you is the point. The Falls of Measach are louder after rain, which in this part of the world is most days.

How to do it

Good shoes. The paths are not a shopping centre. If you hate heights, look at the trees. If you have children, hold them; the National Trust for Scotland did not design this for parkour. Dogs on leads. Midges in still summer. Wind on the bridge in winter, which is more honest.

It is a stop, not a day. Combine it with Ullapool, or with a longer swing into Assynt. Do not treat the lay-by like a viewpoint you never get out for — the whole place is the getting out. We pour down the road. Ullapool, the jar.
