Candle wax wants to be liquid and then vapour. That is the job. The fire starts when that job happens next to something that should not be in the flame: a curtain in a draught, a Christmas card on the mantel, a sleeve, a cat. The wax is not a firework. The placement is the risk.
The boring rules that work
- Stay in the room. Every time. No “I’ll just…”.
- Clear space around it. Nothing overhead that can droop.
- Heatproof base. Not a stack of books, not the telly unit’s edge.
- Stop at about 1cm of wax so the tab does not turn the glass into a hot plate.
- Kids and dogs are faster than you think. High and back, or do not light it.
Jars crack if they sit on a cold stone sill with a huge flame in a draught. That is still a placement problem. Trim, still air, care.
We pour in tins and glasses designed to be candles, not heaters. If you want heat, put a jumper on. Bothy Nichts is for the evening, not for the central heating.
