A calm candle almost never sets off a smoke alarm. A sooty one under a detector will, because you are making smoke. The alarm does not care about “hot throw”. It cares about particles.
If yours keeps going off
- Trim the wick. Tall flame, carbon, alarm.
- Move it away from the detector. Directly underneath is a dare.
- Still air. A draught makes smoke even with a short wick.
- Do not burn six at once in a small kitchen and then fry onions.
Steam and aerosols set them off too. If the candle is innocent and the shower is guilty, you already know. Soot is the same carbon the alarm is hunting.
We are not going to tell you to disable a detector so you can have a moody hallway. Trim it, move it, or put it out.
